From the early days of Steel, Steam and Timber on the West Coast, loggers lived in logging camps from the snow melt in spring to the first snows of winter. Entertainment in camp was limited. Possibly a guitar or juice harp, but more often tall tales loggers would spin.

Who fell the largest tree, who had the sharpest axe…. Who was the “King of the Woods?”

This gave way to who could stick an axe closest to the knot in the cedar tree by the cookhouse, or who could split firewood the cleanest and quickest.

On rare occasions when loggers came to town, such as the 4th of July or another celebration, these lumberjacks would celebrate as they knew how, competing with one another. These celebrations of the early 1900s have evolved to the logging competition we enjoy today. The equipment has changed, but the logger is the same today as a quarter century ago, wondering among themselves, ‘Who is the best?’

COMPTETITION EVENTS

Standard Axe Throwing
24-36 inch double bit axe with a 2 1/2 – 3 1/2 pound double blade axe head. All axes will be thrown 20ft from the target. A 3 1/2 lbs Collins axe will be provided and competitors can use their own axe as long as it meets the specs.

Specialty Axe Throwing – Anything resembling an Axe goes!
Any axe of any weight and size allowed. Must have a handle longer than the blade and must have a blade or blades oriented perpendicular to the handle. (no knives or stars). The same 3 1/2 lbs Collins axe will be provided and competitors may use it instead of other specialty axes. All axes will be thrown from 20ft.

50 cc Hot Saw Competition
Power chainsaw 51 cc or less in engine size. No limitation on bar length or chain type. All fuel types allowed. All hot rod modifications allowed but not required. Battery power saws 4 horsepower or less allowed. No chorded saws. A stock Stihl MS 261 with a 20′ bar will be provided if competitors do not have their own saw. Provided saw Competitors may bring their own chain ( 20” .325 pitch .063 gauge)

Unlimited Hot Saw Competition
Power chainsaw open class. No limitation on bar length or chain type. All fuel types allowed. All hot rod modifications allowed but not required. A Stihl MS 661 will be provided if competitors do not have their own saw. Competitors may bring their own chain ( 36” 3/8 pitch .063 gauge).

Choker Setting
Competitors will run 50ft from a start line with one steel logging choker, run over an obstacle course of approx 4 logs and choke the end of the last log. 16′ X 5/8” steel bell and button chokers will be provided. The competitors’ time will be taken from leaving the start line to the time that the choker has been set and they have blown a whistle blast. (whistle provided)

Boot Lace Race
Two person event: Boot wearer must have 11 sets of brass lace hooks on boots total of 22. Boots will be untied on boot wearers feet. Boot lacers will be scored in time from start horn to when both shoes are laced to top and tied.

Bucking Saw
Two person event: Two teams at a time. Sawer teams use a 6ft bucking handsaw to cut through a log on log stands. Time is taken from the start horn to when the log is cut all the way through. Two 6 ft saws will be provided. Teams may enter their own saws.

Vertical Chop
Two at a time. Competitors will use an axe to chop through a ten inch diameter upright log chopping to the center from both sides. Time will be taken from the start horn to the axe cutting through the log. Axes will be provided and competitors may bring their own axe. No size or weight restriction.

Historic Saw Collection
Contestants enter vintage and historic saws for the public to vote on best of award.

Additional awards will go to competitors by class: Highest scoring: Senior Lumberjack and Senior Lumberjill, Greatest Grit (most lumberjack style, public vote), Best Beard (public vote).

Kids Events

Junior Axe – Ages 12-17. Same as specialty axe. Competitors may throw from 16ft from target.

Kids Axe – Ages 6-12. Competitors must be accompanied by a guardian. Competitors throw a weighted soft axe into a foam target that looks like a log. Competitors may throw from 8ft from target.

Kids Choker Race – Up to 10 kids run 50 from the start line with rope chokers, choke logs and blow whistles. Everyone gets a participation ribbon.
